SWEATING IN THE LAND OF SMILES is like the cast of "The Office" meets Anthony Bourdain at a street vendor's. I thoroughly enjoyed the honesty and humor in this book, and what I especially liked was the sense that I was living right there with the author. The ups and downs of working abroad are vividly portrayed. I was amazed at how well he was able to cope with the uncertainty of his job, as well as the WFH restrictions of Covid. Many places he described were familiar to me a month-long stay in Thailand, but I never ventured into Patpong, so it was interesting to see his take on that. He captures the gentleness of Thailand and also its political and economic issues, with many young people having a hard time getting a job. Anyone who's thinking of traveling to Thailand for work or pleasure will benefit from his list of things to see and places to go. These aren't just the typical tourist destinations, but include shopping malls and out of the way shrines. I did find this to be a mostly entertaining collection of memoirs, although the telling of being caught at home in a strange land during a pandemic and the ensuing difficulties was definitely poignant. I was a little jealous at the much lower cost of living in Thailand and fascinated by some of the customs (some of the nicknames people go by were interesting!) but the in-depth description of what all was offered at the sex shops was a little much for my taste. While I understand sex is a big business there, reading about what all women could do to inanimate objects with their body parts could've been toned down. Overall, I'd rate Sweating in the Land of Smiles: Living in Bangkok During the Year of Radical Change 4 stars since the writing was good and the topic was interesting.
